Jack Elder

Jack was born in the Philippines to Army parents and spent his formative years on Army Posts.  He went to elementary school in Washington DC, middle school in Hawaii, and high school in Columbus, Georgia and Anchorage, Alaska.  He learned to play the piano, was a Boy Scout and earned his Firemanship Merit Badge along the way.

He graduated from West Point in 1960 with a degree in engineering and was assigned to Germany; Fort Hood, Texas; III Corps in Viet Nam; and finished as an instructor at Ranger School at Fort Benning, Georgia, where he met and married his wife Julie, who is from Alabama and who graduated from Auburn University with a degree in education.

Jack then joined the Central Intelligence Agency and spent a 25 year career in Bangkok, Thailand; Paris, France; Kinshasa, Belgian Congo; and Athens, Greece.  He earned an MS in "Management of Information Science" in the early days when people believed you could manage it.  After his retirement in 1993, Jack returned to the CIA as contractor for the Administrative Services Staff - ASS - which is all you need to know.  His last government contract expired in 2008.

With less international travel upon retirement, Jack was finally able to indulge himself in his hobbies; model railroading, dancing, and music.  Jack organized the "New HOTS Jazz Orchestra" - a 1920's style hot dance band, played regularly in Washington DC area for 25 years and took the band on six international tours to France, Italy and to play the Art Deco Festival in New Zealand. (That band still continues to perform in the Washington DC area.)

In 2008, Jack and Julie decided to move south to be closer to their children - son Kip, who lives in Orlando and daughter Katy, who lives in Atlanta.  They sold their home in Northern Virginia and moved to Del Webb at Lake Oconee.
